LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America is now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal are at GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (1) hour (some Eastern European countries are two (2) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double-click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Rossini, Zelmira

This was the last opera that Gioachino Rossini wrote for the theaters of Naples. The title role he created for the voice of his bride, the Spanish soprano Isabella Colbran. He had just married her when Zelmira premiered at the Teatro San Carlo in 1822. The newlyweds shortly left for Venice for the first production of Semiramide (1823) at the Teatro La Fenice. Like Semiramide, Zelmira is an opera seria, one which also lies within the genre of the "rescue opera," like Beethoven's Fidelio. (Zelmira did very well in a production in Vienna.) The heroine is a Grecian princess who is betrayed in a power struggle on the Isle of Lesbos and imprisoned, until her husband the Trojan prince Ilos frees her at the very end of the opera.

Zelmira is a Rossinian masterpiece of the early bel canto style that ought to be better known. This opera disappeared from the stage for a very long time. It was revived without acclaim at the San Carlo, Naples in 1965, and was recorded live in performance. There's a preferable recording of Zelmira made at the Teatro Olimpico of Vicenza in 1989, with Claudio Scimone conducting his own I Solisti Veneti and the Ambrosian Singers chorus, featuring Cecilia Gasdia, Bernarda Fink, William Mateuzzi and Chris Merritt. Erato issued this more complete recording of the work on CD in 1990, and Warner Classics brought it back into circulation in 2012. This is yet another recording I have programmed for this month that won praise in the pages of Fanfare magazine. Reviewer David Johnson writes "...the Erato is unquestionably the recording of choice. Everything about it bespeaks careful preparation and a keen understanding of the high Rossini style...the principal singers have splendid voices and are able to cope with Rossini's often merciless challenges." (Fanfare, July/August, 1991)

WDR 3 Oper (Starts at 1804/2:04PM): Königskinder Melodram von Engelbert Humperdinck
