LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America and Europe are now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Dvorak, Stabat Mater | Fairouz, Poems and Prayers
The Dvorak Stabat Mater (1877) is a Lenten perennial. I have presented it at least half a dozen times going at least as far back as 1991 in various recordings. Although it is scored for full orchestra with chorus and vocal soloists, there is a Naïve CD recording making use of the 1876 piano score which I aired on Sunday, March 29, 2009. This choral work established Antonin Dvorak's international reputation. Stabat Mater are the first two words of a medieval Latin devotional poem relating the emotional suffering of the Virgin Mary as she beholds the crucifixion of her Son. In the history of Western art music many other composers have been drawn to it. In terms of length in performance Dvorak's is the longest musical treatment. Affecting in its simplicity, sincerity and heartfelt compassion, the Dvorak Stabat Mater is one of his most beautiful creations. Listen today for a historic recording of Dvorak's Opus 58, taped in monaural sound in 1953 by RIAS Radio Berlin in the Christuskirche. The Hungarian conductor Ferenc Fricsay conducts the RIAS Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Chorus, augmented by the Choir of St. Hedwig's Cathedral of Berlin. There are four vocal soloists.
The Swiss Relief label specializes in CD reissues of vintage recordings of European radio broadcasts. This Relief reissue dates from 2009.

Our programming for Lent now reaches out beyond institutional Christianity and Judaism to embrace , as Beethoven did, the teeming millions of the whole world. There are so many millions out there who are Muslim. New York City-based Mohammed Fairouz (b. 1985) gives us a rare work with universal appeal that has its roots in Islam. Poems and Prayers (2010) is actually Fairouz's Symphony Number Three. It partly uses the Beethoven Ninth as a model. This is a choral symphony in six movements that premiered triumphantly on the West Coast in December of 2013 in UCLA's Royce Hall, where it was recorded live in performance. Neal Stulberg conducted the UCLA Philharmonia, UCLA Chorale and University Chorus, with three vocal soloists. Fairouz prepared his own libretto out of poems and prayers in Arabic and Hebrew. He sets a sacred text to music, the Oseh Shalom or Mourner's Kaddish from the Judaic tradition. The finale of the symphony is a setting of Israeli poet Yehudi Amichai's Seven Laments for the War Dead from 1976, the ''war" here being the long ongoing Arab/Israeli conflict and the Palestinian guerilla resistance fighting. "Night Fantasy" is a small section drawn from State of Siege, the Arabic poem by Mahmoud Darwish about the Israeli siege of Ramallah in 2002. All the poems in Fairouz's choral symphony serve as prayers for peace. The Fairouz Symphony Number Three is indeed a "peace symphony," or in choral terms, a peace cantata of one full hour's length. By the impressive sound of it, it's the composer's sincere and passionate plea. Poems and Prayers was released to the world on a single Sono Luminus compact disc, By the way, there is a Fourth Symphony by Fairouz, titled In the Shadow of No Towers (2012), inspired by the 9/11 disaster, and an oratorio Zabur (2015), both of these works out on CD courtesy of the Naxos record label. Märchenoper von Engelbert Humperdinck

Atmosphärischer Klangzauber zeichnet Engelbert Humperdincks Märchenoper "Königskinder" aus. Im Gegensatz zu "Hänsel und Gretel" wird sie nicht oft gespielt. WDR 3 sendet eine Referenzaufnahme aus dem Jahr 1976.

Engelbert Humperdinck macht in seiner Oper "Königskinder" innere Gefühlswelten hörbar.

ANCIENT LOVE TRIANGLE | VIVID, CAPTIVATING MUSIC | ELECTRIFYING TITLE ROLE

An ancient Druid priestess is at the heart of Bellini’s rarely-performed gem, caught between her passion for an unfaithful Roman lover and her devotion to her people. With returning star Elena Stikhina in the title role. Led by David Angus and supported by BLO favorites Jonathan Burton (Pollione), Sandra Piques Eddy (Adalgisa) and Alfred Walker (Oroveso), this story of passion, politics, and jealousy is a vocal tour de force not to be missed. The WWFM Sunday Opera: Two Victorian Women - "Patience" and "Dorothy"
We’ll be hearing from two Victorian women with two happy endings on this week’s Sunday Opera (3/29 3:00 p.m.) in the form of “Patience” and “Dorothy.”

“Patience” is the better known of the two and comes from the pens of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Patience has never loved, and she looks at all of the lovesick maidens pining after others with scorn. They all love an aesthetic poet named Reginald Bunthorne, but he loves Patience who rejects him causing him to decide to auction himself off to one of the other ladies with the proceeds going to charity as he really doesn’t like poetry. Patience actually had a childhood love who appears as another aesthetic poet named Archibald Grosvenor who is known far and wide as “Archibald the All-Right.” Patience cannot love him now because he is perfection, and it would be selfish for her to do so. Of course, everything works out for the best; all those who are available find a match, and we have the necessary happy ending. Our cast from 1961 includes Mary Sansom as Patience, John Reed as Bunthorne, and Kenneth Sandford as Archibald. Other members of the company include Yvonne Newman, Gillian Knight, Beti Lloyd-Jones, Jennifer Toye, Donald Adams, John Cartier, and Philip Potter. Isidore Godfrey conducts the New Symphony Orchestra of London and The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company Soloists and Chorus.

We have another happy ending for our second opera (and we really need some happy endings) from 1886 and the long forgotten “Dorothy” by Alfred Cellier and B.C. Stephenson. This opera played for an initial run of 931 performances after a rocky start, a record it would keep for nearly two decades. This is another love story where two wealthy young ladies, Dorothy and her cousin Lydia, who think that women are far better off not being married, disguise themselves as country maids only to meet the two men they would eventually marry, who are also in disguise, and who don’t realize the deception until the end of the opera. We’ll hear mostly music and very little dialogue of “Dorothy,” but it’s a chance to hear a piece that was incredibly popular in its day. The cast for this includes Majella Cullagh, Lucy Vallis, Stephanie Maitland, Matt Mears, John Ieuan Jones, and Edward Robinson. Richard Bonynge conducts.

After the operas we’ll have more music of Sullivan with two of his overtures that were arranged by Cellier, his “Overture di ballo,” and a short march from one of his forgotten works, “The Rose of Persia.” (3 hrs., 30 min.)
