LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America and Europe are now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hour (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

At the Opera with Sean Bianco: Host Sean Bianco brings you a full-length opera featuring great voices from the past and present followed by “Opera Potpourri.”

Puccini: La Boheme (1972)
La bohème is an opera in four acts, composed by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger. The world premiere of La bohème was in Turin on February 1, 1896 at the Teatro Regio, conducted by the 28-year-old Arturo Toscanini. Since then, La bohème has become part of the standard Italian opera repertory and is one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide.

In 1946, fifty years after the opera's premiere, Toscanini conducted a commemorative performance of it on radio with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. A recording of the performance was later released by RCA Victor on vinyl record, tape and compact disc. It is the only recording ever made of a Puccini opera by its original conductor.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Harrison, Young Caesar
It's Stonewall Sunday across the nation and much of the world. The lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender community in the United States and worldwide is now celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the historic gay rebellion in New York City's Greenwich Village. Year by year on the fourth Sunday in June I mark Stonewall Sunday with the presentation of an opera by an openly gay male or lesbian composer, or some recorded lyric theaterwork on a gay-related theme. This year the gay composer is Lou Harrison (1917-2003). For years he was named grand marshal of San Francisco's gay pride parade. We know that before the Roman Empire was Christianized attitudes toward homosexuality were different - more flexible in Roman society. The Roman historian Suetonius records that Rome's famous general Julius Caesar as a young man had a homosexual dalliance with Nicomedes, the king of Bithynia in Asia Minor. It was Lou's longtime male lover, Bill Colvig, who suggested this as the subject of a gay opera. In 1970 Harrison composed his second opera, Young Caesar, which he scored for his American gamelan orchestra, augmented by some typical Western instruments. Also included in his conception were Indonesian-style shadow puppets, an onstage orgy and flying penises. The premiere 1972 staging at Caltech Pasadena was a flop. Young Caesar confused its audience. Frankly, the show was regarded as pornographic. Young Caesar thereafter went through a series of remakes, each one bringing Harrison's original conception a little closer to our conventional occidental concept of opera. On the centenary of Harrison's birth the opera was produced by The Industry in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It was performed and recorded live at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles during Gay Pride Month of 2017. Marc Lowenstein was director of music. (The puppets were still part of the show.) The Industry released Young Caesar through its own record label later that year on two compact discs. What you will hear certainly couldn't be visually pornographic, but it is surely a hoot to listen to! It's the highest of high camp! This recording, too, was loaned for broadcast by Rob Meehan.

Opera: Opéra-bouffe von Jacques Offenbach
Die Großherzogin von Gerolstein

Seine Geburtsstadt Köln feiert Jacques Offenbach zum 200. Geburtstag mit einer
Neuinszenierung der Opera-bouffe "Die Großherzogin von Gerolstein". Mezzo-Star
naive junge Soldat Fritz.
schmieden... Militarismus, Nationalismus, Me-too-verdächtige Übergriffe, all
das attackiert Offenbach mit seiner pointierten und brillanten Musik.

Die Großherzogin: Jennifer Larmore, Mezzosopran
Wanda: Emily Hindrichs, Sopran
Fritz: Dino Lüthy, Tenor
Baron Puck: Miljenko Turk, Bariton
Prinz Paul: John Heuzenroeder, Tenor
General Boum: Vincent Le Texier, Bariton
Baron Grogg: Nicolas Legoux, Bass
Népomuc: Alexander Fedin, Tenor
Charlotte: Regina Richter, Mezzosopran
Amélie: Sara Jo Benoot, Mezzosopran
