LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed at the top of this page in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe is now on Standard Time. North America is moving tonight from Daylight Time to Standard Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. At the start of this day GMT, in North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (8) hours for Hawaii. In the different regions in North America, at 2:00AM local time, Daylight time ends. So the balance of this page then lists everything in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Standard Time. In North America, now subtract five (5) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, six (6) hours for the Central Time Zone, and seven (7) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract eight (8) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and nine (9) hours for Alaska, and ten (10) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland are now on GMT throughout. In most of the rest of Europe add one (1) hour (some Eastern European countries are two (2) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

At the Opera with Sean Bianco: Host Sean Bianco brings you a full-length opera featuring great voices from the past and present followed by “Opera Potpourri.”

Saint-Saens: Samson st Dalila, February 23, 2019
Tune in to hear a 1963 recording of Saint-Saens Samson and Dalila.

Samson and Delilah is a grand opera in three acts and four scenes by Camille Saint-Saëns to a French libretto by Ferdinand Lemaire. It was first performed in Weimar at the Grossherzogliches Theater on December 2, 1877 in a German translation.

The opera is based on the Biblical tale of Samson and Delilah found in Chapter 16 of the Book of Judges in the Old Testament. It is the only opera by Saint-Saëns that is regularly performed. The second act love scene in Delilah's tent is one of the set pieces that define French opera. Two of Delilah's arias are particularly well known: "Printemps qui commence" ("Spring begins") and "Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix" ("My heart opens itself to your voice", also known as "Softly awakes my heart"), the latter of which is one of the most popular recital pieces in the mezzo-soprano/contralto repertoire.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Paisiello, Fedra
We commonly think of Giovanni Paisiello (1740-1816) as a composer of Italian comic opera. After all, it was he who wrote the original "Barber of Seville" in 1782, the one that came before Rossini's "Barber" of 1816. The old Mercury LP and Frequenz CD recordings of Paisiello's Il Barbiere di Siviglia I have broadcast several times over the years. I have also aired recordings of other, lesser known Neapolitan opere buffe by Paisiello, like Socrate Imaginario (1773) or La Grotta di Trofonio (1785). After the adopted son of Naples got back from his sojourn in Russia in 1784 he ceased to crank out so many of those comic operas in favor of works with more serious content. His sentimental romantic comedy Nina, ossia la Pazza per Amore (1789) was an enormous hit. I broadcast the Ricordi CD release of Nina on Sunday, August 15, 2004. Nina has its serious moments, but Fedra (1791), is more truly an opera seria. It tells a story taken up many times before by opera composers about Hippolytus and Aricia. This operatic version of the ancient Greek legend is given a happy ending. The role of Queen Phaedra (in Italian Fedra) is a study in guilt. Fedra was staged in 2016 at the Teatro Massimo Bellini of Catania in Sicily. The production draws upon Paisiello's autograph score as preserved in the library of the Naples Conservatory. Jerome Correas conducts the chorus and orchestra of the Teatro Massimo. The Italian Dynamic record label issued Fedra on two compact discs in 2016. Dynamic informs us that this is the world premiere recording of Paisiello's work.

The WWFM Sunday Opera: "Joseph Merrick the Elephant Man" by Laurent Petitgirard
You think that you have relationship issues?  Well, we’re going to be looking at some complicated connections on this week’s Sunday opera (2/24 3:00 p.m.), and then, we’ll have a bit of careless abandon!  We’ll begin with Laurent Petitgirard’s operatic version of “Joseph Merrick the Elephant Man.”  With a book based loosely on the play by Bernard Pomerance by Eric Nonn, the story centers on the life of an extremely deformed man who craves kind human interaction and to live like a “normal man.”  The cast includes Nathalie Stutzmann, Nicolas Rivenq, Robert Breault, and Marie Devellereau with the French Opera Chorus and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo with the composer conducting.

Our second challenging relationship comes from the 1938 ballet by Manuel de Falla entitled “El amor brujo” about an Andalusian Gypsy named Candela who must dance with the ghost of her dead husband who is obsessed with her.  Finally, she tricks her husband’s lover, Lucia, to attend one of her dances, and at the last minute, Candela changes places with Lucia, and Lucia is “spirited” away leaving Candela to love the man whom she has really always loved.  We’ll end on a happy note with the ballet arrangement of the music of Jacques Offenbach titled “Gaite Parisienne” which is all about flirtations and high spirits. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

GIUSEPPE VERDI Rigoletto
Verdi’s tragic jester returns in Michael Mayer’s neon-bedecked, Las Vegas–themed production. Baritones Roberto Frontali and George Gagnidze share the title role, and soprano Nadine Sierra reprises her portrayal of Gilda, the role that helped launch her now-blossoming Met career. Tenors Vittorio Grigolo, Francesco Demuro, Matthew Polenzani, and Stephen Costello share the role of the lascivious Duke, and Nicola Luisotti conducts.
