LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed at the top of this page in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe is now on Standard Time. North America is moving tonight from Daylight Time to Standard Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. At the start of this day GMT, in North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (8) hours for Hawaii. In the different regions in North America, at 2:00AM local time, Daylight time ends. So the balance of this page then lists everything in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Standard Time. In North America, now subtract five (5) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, six (6) hours for the Central Time Zone, and seven (7) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract eight (8) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and nine (9) hours for Alaska, and ten (10) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland are now on GMT throughout. In most of the rest of Europe add one (1) hour (some Eastern European countries are two (2) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

FRANCESCO CILEA Adriana Lecouvreur
“A pinnacle of a lifetime of opera-going … Anna Netrebko is the ultimate diva” (Observer) in the title role of the real-life French actress who dazzled 18th-century audiences with her on- and offstage passion. Gianandrea Noseda conducts. Sir David McVicar’s engrossing new staging sets the action in a working replica of a Baroque theater.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Adams, Doctor Atomic
One of the founders of musical minimalism, John Adams (b. 1947) has modified and refined his style as time went along and he became one of the major composers of opera in America. As this opera program went along I presented several recordings of his lyric theaterworks, notably Nixon in China (1987) on Sunday, September 4, 1988, The Death of Klinghofer (1991) on Sunday, March 7,1993 and I was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw The Sky (1997) on Sunday, March 21, 1999.

Some people think Adams really hit his stride in the genre later yet with Doctor Atomic (2005), the story of the physicist Doctor Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the first atomic bomb. Oppenheimer and his colleagues at the Los Alamos site were certainly conflicted about what they were doing. This bomb of theirs could kill thousands of innocent people! Furthermore, by the Spring of 1945 Germany had been defeated and the necessity to use such a weapon of mass destruction was very much in doubt. Oppenheimer's internal crisis spills over to affect his wife and her Native American maid. There's a live recording of Doctor Atomic, the world premiere recording, made in connection with its stage premiere by San Francisco Opera. In 2017 a second recording was made in BBC studios following the English National Opera performances. Starring as "Oppie" is baritone Gerald Finley. The composer himself conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Singers. You will hear Doctor Atomic as issued on two Nonesuch compact discs in 2018. Writing for Fanfare magazine in its Nov/Dec 2018 issue, reviewer Phillip Scott opines "Doctor Atomic is an important, moving and frightening work, and this recording is quite simply definitive." (3 hrs., 30 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari's "Jewels of the Madonna" and "La Vita Nuova"
Venetian composer Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari is the featured composer on this week’s Sunday Opera as we look at two of his works.

The first is his only example of verismo opera in “The Jewels of the Madonna” which is about the willful Maliella who is loved by two men: her adoptive brother, the gentle blacksmith Gennaro and the blackguard leader of the local Camorristi, Rafael who only wants her because she’s a virgin. Our cast includes Pauline Tinsley, Peter Glossop, Malcolm King, Andre Turp, and Valerie Cockx. They’re joined by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Alberto Erede.

Following the opera, join Michael Kownacky for Wolf-Ferrari’s oratorio “La Vita Nuova, Op. 9.” Based on the work of Dante Alighieri, the oratorio for soprano, baritone, and choruses, looks at courtly love and the attempt by Dante to raise it to an almost idealized sacred level. The soloists are Celina Lindsley and George Fortune and they’re joined by the St. Hedwig’s Children’s Choir and the St. Hedwig’s Berlin Cathedral Choir. Roland Bader conducts.

Rounding out the afternoon will be orchestral selections from Wolf-Ferrari’s opera “Il Campiello” (“The Square”) featuring the prologue, ritornello, and intermezzo. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

The soprano is joined by tenor Piotr Beczała, “in sterling form” (Financial Times) as Adriana’s lover, Maurizio, as well as the “stupendous” (New York Times) mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili and baritone Ambrogio Maestri. Gianandrea Noseda conducts. Sir David McVicar’s engrossing new staging sets the action in a working replica of a Baroque theater.

Presented from the Met by Mary Jo Heath and Ira Siff
