Although many of his works have faded from memory, his classics Lucia di Lammermoor, Don Pasquale, and Lelisir damore have never left the worlds stages. Oper (Starts at 1306/8:06AM): mit Michael Blees. (1 hr., 24 min.)

Along with Puccini's Manon Lescaut, it's one of two operatic versions of the same story. Both dramas have long been part of opera's standard rep, and while it's hard to outshine Puccini when it comes to tragic romance, Massenet may just have done it. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

1800 1:00PM | Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Charpentier, David et Jonathas. The influence of the Italian immigrant composer Jean Baptiste Lully was so overwhelming upon the Royal French court that no native born French composer in the reign of Louis XIV could get an opera of his own performed before the king. Only after Lully died in 1687 did the field become open once again to French opera composers of merit. One of the best of them, Mark Antoine Charpentier (1643 - 1704), wrote a Lullian-style opera on a Biblical subject for performance at the Jesuit college in Paris, where he was musical director. This was David et Jonathas (1688), which was intended as a special Lenten entertainment for his churchly patrons. It is the only surviving example of "sacred lyric tragedy" from the era of the Sun King. The one existing copy of the score for David et Jonathas is corrupt, with a lot of transcribing mistakes and actual gaps running into many bars of music. Michel Corboz, a pioneer in the authentic recreation of baroque music, painstakingly reconstructed David et Jonathas for a staged revival of the work by Opera de Lyon in 1981. Corboz conducts the English Bach Festival Baroque Orchestra and a cast of French singers, as recorded for the French Erato label. Erato made this recording available again in CD format on two silver discs in its "Libretto" series. I last broadcast David et Jonathas on Sunday, March 14, 1993. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

2100 4:00PM | Metropolitan
Opera: Well-known as a champion of Verdi's early works, the conductor
Riccardo Muti makes his long-awaited Met debut with this remarkable opera, Attila,
which is being performed for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera. The story
of Attila explores a pivotal moment in history - the collapse of the Roman Empire
under attacks from the 'barbarians' led by Attila. The demanding title role is
sung here by the young Russian bass Ildar Abrazakov. Attila is a ruthless but
honourable leader who falls in love with one of his conquests, the Italian slave
Odabella, sung by the soprano Violeta Urmana. She, in turn, seeks revenge on Attila
because he killed her father. The tenor Ramón Vargas is her lover, Foresto,
who rallies the defeated Italian people and Carlos Alvarez is the General Ezio,
a brilliant but corrupt soldier. Veteran bass Samuel Ramey, himself a spectacular
Attila in the 1970s and 80s, makes a cameo appearance as Leone (Pope Leo 1). One
of the opera's most stirring moments is the historical scene between Attila and
the Pope (who convinced the invader to spare Rome). It is a fascinating story
of the clash of religions, politics and love with a score full of the youthful
vitality and magnificent spirit of the 33-year old musical genius. Attila:

Still, its tragic, cross-cultural story has particular resonance in today's world, and this production from Montpellier features a stirring performance with the exciting young soprano Ermonela Jaho in the title role.
