LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America and Europe are now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

At the Opera with Sean Bianco: Host Sean Bianco brings you a full-length opera featuring great voices from the past and present followed by “Opera Potpourri.”

La Gioconda (RCA 1957) May 23, 2020
Tune in to host Sean Bianco's favorite opera, Ponchielli's La Gioconda recorded in 1957 staring Zinka Milanov in the title role and the late Rosalind Elias.

La Gioconda is an opera in four acts by Amilcare Ponchielli set to an Italian libretto by Arrigo Boito (as Tobia Gorrio), based on Angelo, Tyrant of Padua, a play in prose by Victor Hugo, dating from 1835.
First performed in 1876, La Gioconda was a major success for Ponchielli, as well as the most successful new Italian opera between Verdi's Aida (1871) and Otello (1887). It is also a famous example of the Italian genre of Grande opera, the equivalent of French Grand-Opéra.
Ponchielli revised the work several times; the version that is played today was first given in 1880. There are several complete recordings of the opera, and it is regularly performed, especially in Italy. It is one of only a few operas that features a principal role for each of the six major voice types.
This opera was the first opera host Sean Bianco every heard and has remained his favorite opera to this day.

Sverige Radios symfoniorkester.
Dirigent: Daniel Harding.

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Sir Arthur Sullivan's "Ivanhoe"

There have always been experimental operas, and we’re going to sample one on this week’s Sunday Opera with Sir Arthur Sullivan’s “Ivanhoe.” Sullivan decided that the world needed a uniquely English opera written in what he called the “eclectic style” that would build on the existing forms found in European opera. He based his new, experimental opera on Sir Walter Scott’s 1819 novel “Ivanhoe” which was a favorite of the British public. With a libretto by Julian Sturgis, the opera premiered in January of 1891, ran for 155 consecutive performances, which was then a record, only to virtually disappear by the beginning of the 20th century. Ivanhoe is a knight who is faithful to Richard the Lionheart which puts him at odds with the Saxons in England of the time. If you know the novel, you may find Sturgis’ libretto interesting as it seems to focus on all of the scenes that happen between the events that occur in the novel.

Our cast includes Toby Spence as Ivanhoe and Janice Watson as the Lady Rowena. They’re joined by Geraldine McGreevy, Neal Davies, Stephen Gadd, and James Rutherford with the Adrian Partington Singers and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with David Lloyd-Jones conducting. After the opera we’ll have more music of Sullivan with the ballet score for “Pineapple Poll” which is an arrangement by Charles Mackerras of many of Sullivan’s melodies from the operas he wrote with W.S. Gilbert to a story Gilbert penned in his “Bab Ballads.” (3 hrs., 30 min.)
