LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America and Europe are now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal are one (1) hoour ahead of GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Verdi: Otello, November 18, 2017

Tune in to hear Giuseppe Verdi's penultimate opera, Otello staring Mario del Monaco, Renata Tebaldi and Aldo Protti.

Otello is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Arrigo Boito, based on Shakespeare's play Othello. It was Verdi's penultimate opera, and was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, on February 5, 1887.

With the composer's reluctance to write anything new after the success of Aida in 1871 and his retreat into retirement, it took his Milan publisher Giulio Ricordi the next ten years, first to persuade him to write anything, then to encourage the revision of Verdi's 1857 Simon Boccanegra by introducing Boito as librettist, and finally to begin the arduous process of persuading and cajoling Verdi to see Boito's completed libretto for Otello in July/August 1881. However, it wasn't until 1884, five years after the first drafts of the libretto, with most of the work finishing in late 1885. When it finally premiered in Milan on February 5, 1887, it proved to be a resounding success.

SPECIAL PROGRAM: Giuseppe Verdi

(Alfred Brendel / Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields / Neville Marriner) (2 hrs., 56 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Rossini's "Tancredi" from Opera Southwest

The Sunday Opera travels to Albuquerque’s Opera Southwest this week (11/19 3:00 p.m.) for Giocchino Rossini’s “Tancredi.” The libretto by Gaetano Rossi (who would write the libretto for Rossini’s “Semiramide” ten years later) features both a happy and tragic ending for this story that includes a love story that is affected by false assumptions and disguise. Heather Johnson stars in the title role, and the rest of the cast includes Lindsay Ohse, Heath Huberg, Matthew Curran, Madelyn Wanner, and Chelsea Duval-Major in a production conducted by Anthony Barrese. We’ll be celebrating another Birthday after the opera when host Michael Kownacky brings you music of Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov on his 158th birthday including both suites of his Caucasian Sketches and the rarely heard “Mtsiri,” based on a poem by Mikhail Lermontov and featuring soprano Hasmik Hatsagorstian with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

SPECIAL PROGRAM: Bizet's 'Carmen' with Piques Eddy, Shelton, Garrett and Phillips from Austin.

KMFA is proud to bring you a live broadcast of Austin Opera's production of George Bizet's Carmen. Mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy, praised for her “dark, sensuous mezzo and charming stage presence” (Opera Magazine), stars in the provocatively alluring title role alongside tenor Chad Shelton, the naïve soldier who succumbs to her advances to tragic end. Baritone Norman Garrett will storm the stage in his Austin Opera debut as the Toreador, Escamillo.

The story is filled with passion, obsession, revenge and remorse; complete with soldiers, smugglers, a Toreador and the beguiling woman at the center of it all, Carmen. KMFA's Sara Schneider and Dianne Donovan are your hosts for this live broadcast from The Long Center in Austin.
