LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America and Europe are now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Opera: DMMO’s The Abduction from the Seraglio

The Des Moines Metro Opera unearthed every percussion instrument they could find to create a Turkish palace and harem setting for Mozart’s sparkling three-act singspiel, The Abduction from the Seraglio. Egel stated that: “Set against the exotic backdrop of the Ottoman Empire, Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio features Belmonte, a Spanish nobleman, who has been separated from the woman he loves by pirates. This humorous tale brilliantly plays on timeless human foibles. Mozart lavished some of his finest music on the delightful story and libretto. Maestro Dean Williamson conducted the DMMO Festival Orchestra and Chas Rader-Shieber served as stage director.”

The DMMO’s debut cast included four rising opera stars. Tenor Ben Bliss portrayed the hero, Belmonte. Coloratura soprano Amanda Woodbury sang the role of the kidnapped heroine and fiancée, Konstanze. Soprano Ashley Emerson depicted Konstanze’s maid, Blonde. Tenor Jonathan Blalock played Belmonte’s man-servant Pedrillo. Bass Matt Boehler appeared as the Pasha’s heavyweight commander Osmin. The Pasha Selim’s speaking role was performed by David Adam Moore. (No duration given)

Wagner's The Ring...
Tune in to hear part 2 of Richard Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung, Die Walkure. This 1966 recording, often referred to as The Solti Ring Cycle, stars Hans Hotter, James King and Birgit Nilsson.

Die Walküre (The Valkyrie) is the second of the four music dramas that constitute Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, (English: The Ring of the Nibelung). It was performed, as a single opera, at the National Theatre Munich on June 26, 1870, and received its first performance as part of the Ring cycle at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on August 14, 1876.
The story of Die Walküre is based on the Norse mythology told in the Volsunga Saga and the Poetic Edda. In this version the Volsung twins Sieglinde and Siegmund, separated in childhood, meet and fall in love. This union angers the gods who demand that Siegmund must die. Sieglinde and the couple's unborn child are saved by the defiant actions of Wotan's daughter, the title character, Valkyrie Brünnhilde, who as a result faces the gods' retribution.
In accordance with this scheme Wagner preceded Siegfried's Death (later Götterdämmerung (The Twilight of the Gods) with the story of Siegfried's youth, Young Siegfried, later renamed Siegfried. This was in turn preceded by Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), dealing with Siegfried's origins, the whole tetralogy being fronted by a prologue, Das Rheingold. Because Wagner prepared his texts in reverse chronological sequence, Die Walküre was the third of the dramas to be conceived and written, but appears second in the tetralogy.

OPERETTEN-BOULEVARD

SPECIAL PROGRAM: P2 Guldkoncerten - Mirella Freni in memoriam

Mirelli Freni, sopran.
Luciano Pavarotti, tenor.

Dirigent: Leone Magiera.

Il Cartellone: Mozart, Zaide
TEATRO DELL'OPERA DI ROMA

ZAIDE
