LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed at the top of this page in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe is now on Standard Time. North America is moving tonight from Daylight Time to Standard Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. At the start of this day GMT, in North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (8) hours for Hawaii. In the different regions in North America, at 2:00AM local time, Daylight time ends. So the balance of this page then lists everything in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Standard Time. In North America, now subtract five (5) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, six (6) hours for the Central Time Zone, and seven (7) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract eight (8) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and nine (9) hours for Alaska, and ten (10) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland are now on GMT throughout. In most of the rest of Europe add one (1) hour (some Eastern European countries are two (2) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

At the Opera with Sean Bianco: Host Sean Bianco brings you a full-length opera featuring great voices from the past and present followed by “Opera Potpourri.”

Verdi: Il Trovatore (CETRA 1951)
Tune in to hear Verdi's Il Trovatore staring Giacomo Lauri Volpi recorded in 1951 on CETRA.

Il trovatore or "The Troubadour" is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto largely written by Salvadore Cammarano, based on the play El trovador (1836) by Antonio García Gutiérrez. It was Gutiérrez's most successful play.
The premiere took place at the Teatro Apollo in Rome on January 19, 1853, where it "began a victorious march throughout the operatic world," a success due to Verdi's work over the previous three years that had produced La Traviata and Rigoletto.
Today, Il Trovatore is performed frequently and is a staple of the standard operatic repertoire.

In deze uitzending
Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest
Daniel Harding, dirigent
Pierre-Laurent Aimard, piano
Elena Zhidkova, mezzosopraan
Gábor Bretz, bas
Örs Kisfaludy, spreker

1. Antonín Dvorák – Pianoconcert op.33
2. Béla Bartók – Hertog Blauwbaards Burcht

Opname van het concert gegeven op 7 december 2018 in de Grote Zaal van het Concertgebouw te Amsterdam.

Artist in residence Pierre-Laurent Aimard

The spectacular Robert Carsen production returns to the Met for the first time since 2000, with bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as the diabolical title character, tenor Michael Fabiano as Faust, and soprano Angela Meade as Margherita. Mefistofele is the celebrated and only completed opera by Arrigo Boito—who famously collaborated with Verdi on the libretti for Otello and Falstaff.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Massenet: Esclarmonde

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera host Keith Brown writes:
Only a few of the many operas of Jules Massenet, like his Manon (1884) and Thais (1894) or Werther (1892) continue to hold the operatic stage to the present day. Consider Massenet's Le Cid (1885), a chivalric piece which remained popular before the First World War but thereafter faded into obscurity. (I have broadcast a recording of Le Cid a couple of times.)
Such also was the fate of Esclarmonde, a medieval romance for the lyric stage with exotic and magical elements. The premiere of Esclarmonde coincided with the opening of the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris, for which the Eiffel Tower had been specially constructed. Parisian audiences went into raptures over Esclarmonde. After a long run at the Opera Comique it did the rounds of Europe's great opera houses, but by the dawn of the twentieth century it was gone from the repertoire. Even the composer discouraged further performances of it, although it remained his personal favorite to the end.
The late great diva Joan Sutherland was responsible for the 1975 recorded revival of Esclarmonde in which she sang the title role. Her husband Richard Bonynge directed the National Philharmonic Orchestra of the UK and the John Alldis Choir. The British Decca/London record label released Esclarmonde on three stereo LPs. I last presented this recording on Sunday, May 15, 1988. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

Montserrat Caballé in memoriam

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Gioachino Rossini's "William Tell" from Opera Southwest
By MICHAEL KOWNACKY • DEC 6, 2018
WWFM Sunday Opera with Michael Kownacky

The heroic folk-legend of Swiss patriot William Tell is this week’s Sunday Opera (12/2 3:00 p.m.) from Opera Southwest. Gioacchino Rossini’s opera, with a libretto by Etienne de Jouy and Hippolyte-Louis-Florent Bis which was based on the play by Friedrich Schiller, features the love story of Arnold and Mathilde told against the Swiss fight for freedom, led by Tell, from the Austrians who have been in power for one-hundred years.

The cast includes Sean Anderson in the title role, Claudi Chapa as his wife Hedwige, Sharin Apotolou as Jemmy, Tell’s son, Caroline Worra as Mathilde, and Matthew Vickers as Aarnold. Also included in the cast are Justin Hopkins as Gesler, Jeffrey Beruan as Walter, Hans Tashjian as Melchtal, Arnold’s Father, Xavier Prada Caceres as Ruodi, and Joseph Cordova s Rodolphe. Anthony Barrese conducts the Opera Southwest Orchestra and Chorus. We’ll take a bit of a departure after the opera with a ballet score by Paul Reade for “Hobson’s Choice” which was based on the play by Harold Brighson about a headstrong woman to takes her father to task and makes her and her sisters’ lives better as a result. The score will be played by the Royal Ballet Symphonia conducted by Barry Wordsworth. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

SPECIAL PROGRAM: Handel’s Messiah: In the summer of 1741 Handel was at the peak of his musical prowess, but depressed and in debt. He began setting Charles Jennens' Biblical libretto to music at his usual breakneck speed. In just 24 days, Messiah was complete. Right up to the day of the premiere, Messiah was troubled by production difficulties and last-minute rearrangements of the score. Despite these difficulties, the oratorio soon became a favorite of audiences, with a popularity that lasts to this day. Join us for a broadcast of the complete oratorio conducted by Andrew Davis, with singers Kathleen Battle, Florence Quivar, John Aler, and Samuel Ramey. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
