LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Gounod: La Reine de Saba

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera host Keith Brown writes:

I told you listeners how "you dunno Gounod like I know Gounod!" when I presented the world premiere recording of the original 1859 version of his world famous Faust on Sunday, June 20 of this year. That dark opéra comique, with spoken dialog, has quite a different effect on the ear than the later French grand opera we all know too well. Remember that Charles Gounod wrote twelve operas and some of them were not such big hits. There's a recording of his first opera Sapho (1851) that I presented on Sunday, June 13, 1999. Then there's Gounod's bloody thriller, his second opera La Nonne Sanglante (1854) that went over the air at Halloweentide on the last Sunday of October, 2011 in its world premiere recording for the German CPO record label, with the performing forces of Theater Osnabrück.

Now along comes the world premiere on disc of Gounod's third opera La Reine de Saba, "The Queen of Sheba," in its restored five-act 1863 version. This is Gounod's first attempt at lavish grand opera following in the footsteps of Meyerbeer and his Robert le Diable (1831). Such a full restoration would include the requisite ballet sequence in Act Four. The Queen of Sheba, here called Balkis, a woman of legendary beauty, is betrothed to King Soliman (Soloman), but when she arrives in Jerusalem for the nuptials she promptly falls in love with the architect of Soliman's monumental Temple. She attempts to put off the wedding, with tragic results. You won't get to see the grand onstage spectacle of La Reine de Saba, but you will certainly hear its musical score in all its glory, as Gil Rose conducts the Odyssey Opera Orchestra and Chorus. The recording was made in 2018 at Jordan Hall in Boston for release through the BMOP Sound label on three CD's in 2021. Starring as Queen Balkis is soprano Kara Shay Thomson. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

WDR 3 Oper: Der Kreidekreis
Oper von Alexander Zemlinsky

Alexander Zemlinsky hätte diese Woche seinen 150. Geburtstag gefeiert.

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Mozart's "La Clemenza di Tito" from LA Opera

Let’s talk about an operatic hero who does very little during the course of the opera other than be an extremely nice person.   That’s Tito (Emperor Titus) in this week’s Sunday Opera (10/17 3:00 p.m.) in Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” from LA Opera.   Tito (Russell Thomas) is the Roman Emperor who has chosen Berenice, the daughter of a rival, to be his wife.  This angers Vitellia (Quanqun Yu) who, as the daughter of the former emperor, feels she should be next in line.  She convinces Sesto (Elizabeth DeShong), a young patrician in love with her, to plot Tito’s assassination.   Meanwhile, Tito has turned his attentions from Berenice to Servilia (Janai Brugger), Sesto’s sister.

Sesto is pleased with but torn about this because he’s Tito’s friend, but he has also promised Vitellia that he would kill Tito to prove his love for Vitellia.  Fortunately, the assassination attempt fails, and Tito is now faced with decreeing Sesto’s death for initiating it.   Tito is also faced with Servilia explaining that she is in love with Annio (Taylor Raven) who is Sesto’s friend and has promised herself to him.   Annio and Servilia convince Vitellia to intercede on Sesto’s behalf, and just before Tito announces his decision to pardon Sesto, he's faced with a new conspirator.   However, being as magnanimous as he is, he also pardons Vitellia and releases Servilia so that she can marry Annio.   The opera ends with Tito praying to the gods that they will cut his life short on the day that he stops caring for the welfare of Rome and its people.  " class="wysiwyg-break drupal-content" src="/sites/all/modules/contrib/wysiwyg/plugins/break/images/spacer.gif" title="<--break-->">The cast also includes James Cresswell as Publio, the Commander of the Praetorian Guards.   Once again, James Conlon will conduct the LA Opera Chorus and Orchestra.

After the opera, please stay tuned and join Michael Kownacky as he features three of the many composers who were contemporaries of Mozart and have been pretty much overshadowed by him.   To this end, we’ll hear symphonies by Muzio Clementi, Franz Krommer, and Paul Wranitzky. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
