LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America is now on Daylight Time. Europe is shifting to Daylight Time today at 2:00AM local time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal are one (1) hour ahead of GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are still on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

DES MOINES METRO OPERA

Jonathan Dove's Flight

Inspired by the true predicament of a refugee stuck in an airport for 18 years, Jonathan Dove’s Flight is truly one-of-a-kind.
Stage director Kristine McIntyre believes the “unbound future” draws all of the characters in Flight. Our “constant human need to recreate ourselves and our relationships” are a central theme throughout the opera.
Flight takes an ordinary place – an airport – and highlights the qualities that actually make it extra-ordinary. Dove describes airports as “portals between the everyday world and the magical world of flying.”
The opera will warm the hearts of all listeners. As the plot unfolds, each character's inner conflict leads to the ultimate compassionate conclusion.

The Des Moines Metro Opera cast for Flight includes:

Refugee – John Holiday, countertenor
Controller – Audrey Luna, coloratura soprano
Bill – Andrew Bidlack, tenor
Tina – Zulimar López-Hernández, soprano
Older Woman – Deanne Meek, mezzo-soprano
Stewardess – Sofia Selowsky, mezzo-soprano

De opera werd gecomponeerd en geschreven in opdracht van Karel Theodoor van Beieren. De opera werd voor het eerst op 29 januari 1781 in München opgevoerd. Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Vivaldi: Dorilla in Tempe
Keith Brown writes:
We commonly think of Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) as a violin virtuoso who wrote hundreds of concertos for the violin and other instruments. He's famous for "The Four Seasons" concertos in particular. Yet for much of his career as a composer Vivaldi wrote opera. In fact, he was one of the single most prolific composers of Italian opere serie in the history of music. (The master once boasted that he wrote at least ninety four of them!) There are perhaps two dozen Vivaldi operas that survive musically complete or almost complete, another couple of dozen of which certain portions are extant, plus fragments of a couple of dozen more. In addition, we know that he composed other operas for which the scores have gone entirely missing. Vivaldi recycled a lot of his opera music. He contributed to pastiche operas in collaboration with other composers, or he contributed single arias to other men's works. We also know he ghost-wrote a few operas on commission. Piles of Vivaldi manuscripts are preserved in the Italian National University Library in Turin. Performance scores of the Vivaldi operas have been prepared from the priceless Foa/Giordano collection of the Biblioteca Nazionale.

Various European period instrument ensembles have made studio recordings of these long forgotten works. The French record label Naïve has released those recordings in its long-ongoing "Vivaldi Edition" series. The latest in the series is Dorilla in Tempe (1734), which is styled a Melodramma eroico-pastorale in three acts. Naïve released it on three CD's in 2017 as Vol. 55. Musicologist Alberto Stevanin prepared the performing edition of this particular score. Dorilla is a pastiche composition. Yeah, most of it is indeed Vivaldi's doing, but of its twenty-one arias, eight are by other composers: Hasse, Sarri, Vinci, Leo, and Giacomelli. The score quotes from the "Spring" concerto of I Quattri Stagioni. Dorilla in Tempe was recorded in the studios of Italian Swiss Radio/Television in Lugano, with Diego Fasolis leading I Barocchisti and the chorus of Swiss Radio/TV. The six vocal soloists are all well acquainted with the singing practice of the baroque period. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

LA Opera on Air
MOBY DICK
BY JAKE HEGGIE AND GENE SCHEER

“Call it a success… A whale tale with staying power” – Los Angeles Times “Theatrically stunning… epic in scale. A vibrant, compelling piece of musical theater” – San Francisco Chronicle Epic in every sense of the word, Moby-Dick comes to Los Angeles after a series of sold out triumphs around the world. Returning as Captain Ahab is the sensational Jay Hunter Morris, whose “fiery brilliance in his resplendent upper range captured both Ahab’s inner strength and demonic possession” (SanDiego.com). Based on Herman Melville’s classic novel, Jake Heggie’s sweeping, gorgeously detailed score has already taken its rightful place as a true contemporary masterpiece. With astonishing visual effects and a magnificent musical score, one of the very greatest of all American novels comes thrillingly to life on the stage. A fanatical sea captain’s unrelenting obsession for revenge drives his entire crew into the face of death and destruction as they explore the vast and mysterious oceans in search of a monster.
