LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

SPECIAL PROGRAM: Simone Young Conducts Mahler 2

To celebrate their 90th birthday, which coincides with the reopening of the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, the SSO performs Mahler's Symphony No.2.

Popularly known as the Resurrection, it's one of Mahler's best known and most celebrated symphonies. A powerful, soul-shaking landscape of sound. A passionate and expansive journey that would eventually, in Mahler's words, raise "to the highest heights."

Of the Earth is a new work from Kalkadungu composer William Barton designed to complement Mahler's sense of connection with the earth, with country. As William Barton says: "It's about our land, our time, and our people."

Broadcast live in concert at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on 21 July 2022 by ABC Classic. Presenter Genevieve Lang. Producer Brooke Green. Engineers Andrew Edgson, Alexander Stinson, Jolen Camilleri and Joshua Craig.

Sunday Opera: Gaetano Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love from NY's Metropolitan Opera

Italy, 1830: Nemorino, a young villager, is unhappily in love with the beautiful farm owner Adina, who he thinks is beyond his reach.

Adina tells the gathered peasants about the book she is reading: the story of how Tristan won the heart of Iseult by drinking a magic love potion. A regiment of soldiers arrives, led by the pompous Sergeant Belcore, who immediately introduces himself to Adina and asks her to marry him.

Donizetti’s heartwarming comedy stars some of today’s most celebrated bel canto singers as the spunky landowner and the hapless peasant in search of love. Radiant sopranos Golda Schultz and Aleksandra Kurzak alternate as Adina, trading barbs and embraces with tenors Javier Camarena and Xabier Anduaga, in his Met debut, as Nemorino. Italian maestro Michele Gamba also makes his company debut conducting Bartlett Sher’s madcap staging, which features baritones Davide Luciano and Joshua Hopkins as the swaggering Sgt. Belcore and baritone Ambrogio Maestri and bass-baritone Alex Esposito as the lovable huckster Dr. Dulcamara.

Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848) composed about 75 operas in a career abbreviated by mental illness and premature death. Most of his works disappeared from the public eye after his death, but critical and popular opinion of his huge opus has grown considerably over the past 50 years. Felice Romani (1788–1865) was the official librettist of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala and worked with Donizetti on several other operas. (Metropolitan Opera)

World premiere: Teatro Cannobiana, Milan, 1832. L'Elisir d'Amore has been among the most consistently popular operatic comedies for almost two centuries.

Sung in Italian

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Graupner: Antiochus und Stratonica, Act Three | Schubert: Die Winterreise

I have showcased recordings of the operas of the French baroque frequently of late, drawing upon the many recent CD releases of the works of Lully and his successors. This Sunday I turn to the lyric theater music of the German baroque. The most important opera house in Germany during that period was in Hamburg at the Gänsemarkt or "Goose Market." So many of the best German composers of the early eighteenth century wrote music for this theater: Keiser, Mattheson, et al. The young Handel got his start in opera at the Goose Market. Another young composer, a contemporary of Handel, Johann Christoph Graupner (1683-1760) got his start, like Handel, as a harpsichordist there circa 1707-09.

Graupner composed at least five operas for the Goose Market before moving on, also like Handel, to a career elsewhere. Graupner turned down the position of Kantor at Leipzig, a church job which eventually went to J. S. Bach, who was forbidden under contract to write opera. If Bach ever wrote opera, his operatic style might have sounded very much like Graupner's. Or you could say Graupner's style of baroque opera bears a resemblance to the church cantatas of Bach.

Successful on the stage at Hamburg was Graupner's Antiochus und Stratonica (1708?), a melancholy romance set in the ancient Alexandrine Near East around Damascus. The story centers upon a sickly young hero, prince Antiochus, who is beset by quack physicians. His only true cure is found in his love for his widowed father's new wife Stratonica. Opera-goers at the Goose Market were so enamoured of Italian operatic models they demanded some Italian language arias even in the midst of a German language libretto. They also expected some comic relief. There's a disaffected lowlife character named Negodorus (think Papageno) who provides his tongue-in-cheek commentary on the action.

It's a convoluted, difficult theatrical act to follow. The best case has been made for Antiochus und Stratonica by the singers and players of the Boston Early Music Festival, who staged it in 2009. BEMF recorded it in 2020, not in Boston but in Bremen in Germany for Radio Bremen in an unstaged broadcast studio performance. Stephen Stubbs and lutenist Paul O'Dette jointly directed the musical proceedings. The German CPO label released Antiochus und Stratonica on three compact discs.

Broadcasting Graupner's opera poses the same problem I encounter with the operas of Wagner. Antiochus und Stratonica is too long in airplay to fit into the alotted three-and-a-half-hour timeslot for one lyric theater program, so I am forced to spread the complete presentation over two consecutive Sundays.

Following the third and final act of Graupner's opera, keep listening for Franz Schubert's immortal song cycle, Die Winterreise (1827), in a recording which I last presented on Sunday, January 16, 2011. Like Die Schone Müllerin (1823), "Winter's Journey" is Schubert's setting of a collection of short lyric poems by his short-lived contemporary, the German poet Wilhelm Müller (1794-1827). Müller's little lyrical gems beg for musical treatment. Schubert's wonderful Lieder preserve this poet's otherwise obscure verse for posterity. Schubert put his very soul into these songs. Not long before his own untimely death at age thirty-one he sang the entire song cycle himself for a group of his close friends. He shocked them with the portrayal of the step-by-step collapse of the human personality, leading to hallucination, madness, and despair. The Winter Wanderer is left longing for the peace to be found only in the grave. Winterreise is one of the single most profound tragedies in Western musical art. Hear it again on this wintry Sunday afternoon in a 2010 Harmonia Mundi CD release, with tenor Werner Güra accompanied by Christoph Berner playing a nineteenth-century pianoforte. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

WDR 3 Oper: Salome

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Giovanni Battista Ferrandini's "Catone in Utica"

The libretto for this week’s Sunday Opera (1/29 3:00 p.m.) is arguably one of the most used libretti in all of opera. Pietro Metastasio wrote a three-act look at the conflict between Cato the Younger and Caesar for an opera written by Leonardo Vinci in 1727. That same libretto, with a few directorial alterations over the years, would go on to be used another 26 or so times by 1791. Probably, the best-known version of “Catone in Utica” is by Handel from 1732, but we’re going a rarer setting by Giovanni Battista Ferrandini from 1758.

Cato (Kobie van Rensburg) represents the conservative movement that wants to hold on to the long-lost glory of Rome and is in direct odds with Caesar (Robert Crowe) who represents progress and more modern Rome of 46 BC.

Caught in their conflict are Cato’s daughter, Marzia (Simone Schneider), who is secretly in love with Caesar and Arbace (Johnny Maldonado), a Numidian prince who is Cato’s friend and is in love with Marzia. Also involved are Emilia (Sandra Moon) who is seeking vengeance for her husband Pompey’s death and Fulvio (Florian Simson), a Roman legate in Caesar’s camp.

Christoph Hammer is the conductor on this world premier recording, and he’s leading the Munich Neue Hofkapelle.

Stay tuned after the opera for a bit of ballet and Igor Stravinsky’s three-scene retelling of the Orpheus legend. In this recording you’ll hear the Royal Concertgebouw with Neeme Jarvi conducting. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
