LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 10 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 12 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Opera: Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor
from NY's Metropolitan Opera production of 1964

It was a performance of Lucia that literally made Joan Sutherland a star overnight. And no wonder. Her enormous, sumptuous voice seemed made for the role of the hapless young woman, driven mad by her fate.

When Sutherland sang Lucia’s famous “mad scene” it drove audiences, well, mad. Her cascading vocal embellishments seemed both unending and superhuman, but she tossed them off with the élan of an Olympic gymnast dazzling the crowd with a gold-medal performance. But then, Sutherland’s voice was always golden. (Met Opera)

The character of Lucia has become an icon in opera and beyond, an archetype of the constrained woman asserting herself in society.

Donizetti’s handling of this fragile woman’s state of mind remains seductively beautiful, thoroughly compelling, and deeply disturbing. The insanity that overtakes and destroys Lucia, depicted in opera’s most celebrated mad scene, became inexorably linked to Dame Joan Sutherland as one of her show-stopping-arias.

The tragic opera in three acts by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti for which Salvadore Cammarano wrote the Italian-language libretto is loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott's 1819 historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor, one of his best-known novels from his Tales of my Landlord series. A case of art imitating life, the heroine of the novel, Lucy, is based on Janet Dalrymple, the daughter of the 1st Viscount of Stair who secretly got engaged to a political enemy of her family. Just like Lucy in the novel, Janet was forced to marry a different suitor and overcome with stress, subsequently stabbed him on her wedding night. The real-life Lord Arturo, David Dunbar, survived the stabbing, but Janet did not.

Legend says of the September 12th, 1669 attack that David Dunbar recovered from his injuries but would never talk about the events of the dreadful night. In time, he married a daughter of the seventh Earl of Eglinton and eventually died after falling from his horse in 1682. Archibald, Janet’s true love, never married and died in 1685.

The ivy-covered ruins of deserted Baldoon Castle, the historic castle which was owned by the Dunbars of Westfield from 1533 to about 1800 can still be visited and it’s said by some that you can still feel a heaviness of heart as you walk onto the castle grounds and that the ghost of Janet Dalrymple Dunbar haunts the ruin, in a bloodied wedding dress. Sung in Italian. Live concert recording from the Metropolitan Opera, New York on December 5th, 1964 courtesy of Euroradio.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro

I have regularly featured historic recordings, and once again on this occasion, I will be presenting one that originated at Glyndebourne. When it was first recorded in festival production there in 1935, Mozart's Cosí Fan Tutte (1790) was virtually unknown on the operatic stage, as were so many of the Mozart operas, with the possible exception of Don Giovanni, which had occasionally been performed in the nineteenth and earlier twentieth centuries. Way back on Sunday, December 27, 1987 I broadcast the Seraphim LP reissue of the monaural 78 rpm recording of Cosí with Fritz Busch conducting. In 1934 the wealthy English blueblood John Christie opened to the public the newly built opera house on his ancestral estate at Glyndebourne, Sussex not far South of London. Christie was committed to the revival of Mozart's neglected operatic masterworks. His wife, soprano Audrey Mildmay, sang in early Glyndebourne productions of them. Summer festivals at Glyndebourne became a fixture on the international opera scene.

I next broadcast Don Giovanni (1787) as it was taped at the 1955 Festival, which RCA Victor picked up for release stateside on mono hi-fi LPs (Sunday, October 14, 1990). Then came a digitally remastered CD issue in early stereo sound of Le Nozze di Figaro (1786), made live-in-performance at the 1962 Festival. Silvio Varviso directed the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Glyndebourne Chorus. And what a distinguished international singing cast for its time! Italian soprano, Mirella Freni, is Susanna, the Turkish, Leyla Gencer was the Countess, and Swiss, Edith Mathis took on the breeches role of Cherubino. French baritone, Gabriel Bacquier, portrayed Count Almaviva. Figaro was the American, Heinz Blankenburg. Glyndebourne Enterprises, Ltd. released the 1962 "Marriage of Figaro" in digitally reprocessed sonics on three silver discs in 2008. I last presented this classic old recording on Sunday, December 14, 2008 and do so a second time this afternoon. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

WDR 3 Oper: L'Italiana in Algeri

After the opera, join Michael Kownacky for two “western” pieces that were inspired by works from China and Japan.

The first is Gustav Mahler’s moving “Das Lied von der Erde” which features soloists Birgit Finnila and Peter Schrier who are joined by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kurt Sanderling. The piece is based on seven poems from China’s Tang Dynasty that were part of a compilation by Hans Bethge. It was written at a time of great upheaval in Mahler’s life.

The second piece come from the pen of American composer Alan Hovhaness. His Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints was born from his love of the music, arts, and culture of Japan and comprises his response to the three woodprints of the title with Hovhaness’ original music based on the Japanese idiom.
