LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. North America and Europe are now on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone and eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. UK, Ireland and Portugal are one (1) hoour ahead of GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add two (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are still on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

SPECIAL PROGRAM: Composer of the Week
Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677) Episode 3 of 5

An Object of Desire
This week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Barbara Strozzi. She was one of the most important composers of Italian cantatas in the seventeenth century and, probably, also a Venetian courtesan. Strozzi published eight collections of vocal works during her lifetime containing over one hundred works in total, and her music travelled as far as Austria, Germany and England. Dr Sara Pecknold joins Donald Macleod to help lift the veil on this elusive composer.

By the time that Barbara Strozzi was nineteen, reports started to appear in print of her capabilities and virtuosity as a singer. It was also mentioned that she had an amorous gaze, with the beauty of Venus and likened to the Phoenix of the day. Not all the reports which came into print praised Barbara Strozzi, and it was suggested by some that her father Giulio was pimping out his daughter. Dr Sara Pecknold discusses a painting of Barbara Strozzi from the time, which reinforces this idea of the composer as an object of sexual desire. By 1644, Strozzi had launched her career as a composer, publishing her Opus One collection of madrigals.

BBC Radio 3 Big Chamber Day - Tchaikovsky and His Influences. 2/4
Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert

Sarah Walker presents the second of four concerts of songs by Tchaikovsky and his influences from last Saturday's BBC Radio 3 Big Chamber Day at Saffron Hall in Essex. The Big Chamber Day, curated by pianist Anna Tilbrook, features soprano Anush Hovhannisyan, mezzo Caitlin Hulcup, tenor Alessandro Fisher and bass-baritone Ashley Riches. Today's concert is Tchaikovsky and the Poets, with Tchaikovsky's own settings of Goethe and Heine alongside Pushkin and Tolstoy set by Rachmaninov and Rimsky-Korsakov, and Benjamin Britten's cycle Winter Words, setting Thomas Hardy - a poet born the same year as Tchaikovsky (1840) with a similar penchant for melancholy. (2 hrs.)

SPECIAL PROGRAM:  En sadistisk opera!

(2 hrs.)
