LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

SPECIAL PROGRAM: Raadioteater tähistab, eetrisse tuleb Urmas Vadi kuuldemäng "Kääbussiga"

Raadioteatri sünnipäevaks valminud Urmas Vadi kuuldemäng "Kääbussiga" on eetris pühapäeval, 14. aprillil kell 15.

Raadioteatri 96. sünnipäevaks valminud Urmas Vadi kuuldemäng "Kääbussiga" on loodud autori samanimelise novelli põhjal.

"Kääbussiga" on Klassikaraadio eetris pühapäeval, 14. aprillil kell 15.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Meyerbeer: Le Prophète

The lyric stageworks of Giacomo or Jakob Meyerbeer (1791-1864) have long been out of favor. Critics have continually sneered at his music. He's been damned as generally mediocre. Actually, he was the most important composer of opera in the grand manner in his era, the earlier half of the Romantic. Meyerbeer wrote for the grandest lyric stage in all of Europe: the Paris Opera. The best of Meyerbeer's French grand operas is Le Prophète (1849).

The young Richard Wagner sought to write musical stageworks of this scale and calibre. "The Prophet" is a very well put together lyric drama with book by one of the most prolific of French 19th century playwrights, Eugène Scribe (also a figure who was condemned in a later time as mediocre). A top-flight singing cast took part in what I had presumed was a world premiere complete recording of Le Prophète taped in 1976 and released through Columbia Masterworks, with Henry Lewis conducting the Royal Philharmonic and Ambrosian Chorus. That LP recording went over the air way back on Sunday, April 10, 1988.

I have recently come across another, earlier recording of Le Prophète with Lewis conducting the symphony orchestra and chorus of RAI, Radio Italy, Turin in 1970. The aircheck tapes of the broadcast studio recording were issued on Myto compact discs in 1999. The stereo sound heard on the Myto CD transfer is quite good for its era a half century and more ago. Tenor Nicolai Gedda stars as Jean of Leyden, the ill-counseled spiritual liberator of the German city of Munster, with mezzo Marilyn Horne in the role of his mother Fides. (Horne sang the same role again in the 1976 recording.) I note in my record keeping of lyric theater broadcasts that I have broadcast a recording of an opera based on the same historical theme as Le Prophète: Azio Corghi's Divara: Wasser und Blut (1993), composed in commemoration of the 1200th anniversary of the founding of Munster. That Marco Polo CD recording went over the air on Sunday, June 18, 1995. The Myto CD release of Le Prophète was favorably reviewed by the veritable opera expert George Jellinek (Fanfare, Jan/Feb 2000). (3 hrs., 30 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: "Die Herzog von Chicago" and Highlights from "Grafin Mariza" by Emmerich Kalman

We’re showcasing Hungarian composer Emmerich Kalman on this week’s Sunday Opera through two of his operettas: “Die Herzogin von Chicago” (‘The Duchess of Chicago”) and “Grafin Mariza” (“Countess Maritza”).

During his lifetime, Kalman, who is all but forgotten today, was not only known for his own compositions but also for his dedication to the development of the artform now known as the Viennese operetta in general.

We’ve got a complete recording with some of the dialogue of “The Duchess of Chicago” which centers on a bet made by American Mary Lloyd that she can buy “the most expensive thing in Europe.” This ends up with Mary offering the impoverished Prince Sandor a way to save his kingdom from bankruptcy if he will dance the Charlston with her. The problem is that the prince thinks that anything more modern than the waltz is an affront. You see, Mary has bought the prince’s palace, and she sets her sights on the prince to go with it.

Of course there are mistaken identities, disguises, secret romances, and a happy ending along with some absolutely glorious music.

The cast for this recording from 1999 features Endrik Wottrich as Prince Sandor, Monica Groop as Princess Rosemarie, Deborah Riedel as Mary Lloyd, and Brett Polegato as James Bondy along with Par Lindskog, Volker Horn, Reinhart Ginzel, Peter Menzel, and Egbert Junghanns. Who are these people? You’ll just have to tune in this Sunday to find out. They’re joined by the Berlin Radio Chorus and Orchestra and the Schoenberg Boys Choir with Richard Bonynge conducting.

Our second Kalman work features highlights from a more familiar work, in Europe at least, “Countess Maritza.” Once again, we have a wealthy woman, Maritza, who owns a series of large agricultural estates in the Balkans and an impoverished nobleman, Count Tassilo who is in disguise to try to be hired as the overseer for one of Maritza’s estates. Once again, we have mistaken identities, secret loves, crazy wagers, far too much pride, and enough reconciliation for there to be another wonderfully happy ending.

In this 1975 recording, we’ll hear Erzebet Hazy as the Countess, Rene Kollo as Count Tassilo, Dagmar Koller is Lisa, Ljuba Welitsch as Princess Bozena, and Kurt Huemer as Koloman Zuspan, with Benno Kusche, Olivera Miljakovic, and Zoltan Latinovic. They’re supported by the Vienna Operetta Chorus and The Vienna Symphony with Wolfgang Ebert conducting.

If you don’t know the works of Kalman, please tune in – you won’t be disappointed. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
