LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Dibdin: The Ephesian Matron | The Brickdust Man | The Grenadier | The Jane Austen Songbooks

Sure, Vienna was the music capital of the Western World in the latter eighteenth century. This was the era of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, after all. But London was an even greater international capital, and after the death of Handel, continued to have a burgeoning scene for all manner of musicmaking, and lyric theater, too. Active in London's music theater culture then was Charles Dibdin (1745-1814), who wrote short comic operatic works for Covent Garden and Drury Lane and lesser venues as well. These English language works were tuneful pleasantries: by turns silly, witty, satirical, amorous, and sentimental singing sitcoms. Baroque specialist Peter Holman and his Opera Restor'd singers and players staged and recorded reconstructions of Dibdin's oeuvre for the British Hyperion label. Chief among these is the comic serenata The Ephesian Woman (1769), plus two more slender musical dialogues, The Brickdust Man (1772) and The Grenadier (1773). Hear all three today as presented on a single 1992 Hyperion CD release.

England's famous female novelist of this period, Jane Austen (1775-1807) was a considerable amateur musician. She played piano quite well and copied out for her own use in provincial home musicmaking sessions a quantity of short vocal pieces which would have remained popular in London into Napoleonic times. Dibdin's songs were among these pieces. Handel, Gluck, and Ignace Pleyel were also represented in chamber arrangements, along with tunes by a score of now obscure English musical figures. Austen seems to have had good musical taste as witnessed in these preserved handwritten songbooks. Generous recorded excerpts from them have been issued in two compact disc compilations, Jane's Hand (Vox,1996) and Jane Austen Entertains (Classical Communications,Ltd., 2007). Various vocal soloists are accompanied on harpsichord or pianoforte, with baroque violin or wooden flute obbligato parts in some cases, giving the sound of it all a true "period' quality. .)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Alexander Zemlinsky's "Der Traumgorge" or "The Dream of Gorge"

It’s time for another fairy tale on this week’s Sunday Opera in the form of an opera by Alexander von Zemlinsky that was supposed to premier in 1907 but then disappeared for nearly 80 years due to a personal vendetta by Feliz Weingartner who took over Mahler’s position at the Vienna Court Opera. Weingartner wanted to erase all traces of Mahler, and since Zemlinsky was Mahler's protege, Weingartner targeted him.

“Der Traumgorge” or “Gorge’s Dream” or “The Dreamer Gorge” is based on a libretto by Leo Feld about Gorge (David Kuebler) who is betrothed to Grete (Iride Martinez) but is more interested in his fairy tales. In fact, on the day he is to be married to Grete (arranged by Grete’s father, the Miller (Zelotes Edmund Toliver), so that he is assured to get the mill in which he works. However, this is Gorge’s birthright.), he is at the stream having a vision about a fairy tale princess (Susan Anthony). The vision entices Gorge to run away, and he does, basically leaving Grete at the altar.

Three years pass, and Gorge is living with Gertraud (Patricia Racette) who is an outcast in her village and suspected of being a witch. The innkeeper’s daughter Marei (Natalie Karl) loves Gorge and is jealous that he asks Gertraud to marry him. Marei incites the villagers to attack Gertraud’s house and burn it down. Gorge saves Gertraud, admonishes the village, and they leave together.

They return to Gorge’s village where he takes over the mill, and they build a school. Grete has to settle for Hans (Andreas Schmidt) who loves her very much even if she doesn’t really love him, but everyone, except the former miller, is, for the most part, happy.
They’re joined by the Cologne University for Music Chorus and Orchestra, conducted by James Conlon.

If you’re unfamiliar with the music of Zemlinsky, you may be interested in staying tuned after the opera for a delightful piece intitled Die Seejungfrau (The Mermaid) based loosely, very loosely, on the Hans Christian Andersen story and his Symphony No. 1 in D minor (sometimes called his Symphony No. 2 because Zemlinsky wrote but didn’t finish an earlier symphony.
It’s a happy ending and some lovely music on this week’s Sunday Opera, and we hope that you’ll join us. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
