LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Standard Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Vivaldi: Juditha Triumphans

In addition to hundreds of concertos and dozens of operas. Antonio Vivaldi seems also to have written several oratorios. Juditha Triumphans (1716) is the only one of them to have come down to us intact. It has a Latin libretto by Jacopo Cassetti, who describes it as a "Sacred Military Oratorio." The story he took from the Old Testament Apocrypha. The beautiful Judith saves her native city Betulia from capture by the Assyrian invaders. She first charms and then assassinates their general Holofernes.

Juditha Triumphans is in essence a Venetian-style Italian opera without staging. Vivaldi's scoring calls for some unusual instrumentation very like that for his concertos. Hungaroton, the onetime Hungarian state record label, issued two recordings of this oratorio. The older one went over the air on this program on Sunday, April 18, 1990. That same year Hungaroton came out with a new, better, more historically-informed recorded interpretation. Baroque specialist conductor Nicolas McGegan leads the Hungarian period instrument ensemble Capella Savaria. This later, improved Juditha I last featured on Sunday, February 18, 1996. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

SPECIAL PROGRAM: P2 Guldkoncerten - Gurrelieder

Hør bl.a. Alexander Young som Kong Valdemar, Martina Arroyo som Tove, Janet Baker som Skovduen og Julius Patzak for fortæller.

WDR 3 Oper (Starts at 1904/2:04PM): Aida

Radames: Jonas Kaufmann, Tenor

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Marc-Antoine Charpentier "Medee"
with Lorraine Hunt in the title role

Marc-Antoine Charpentier is the feature composer this week and his take on the Medea myth with the help of the libretto by Thomas Corneille in “Medee” on the Sunday Opera.

The opera begins with a prologue that doesn’t have anything to do with Medea, and it just seems to be Charpentier buttering up King Louis XIV with a short segment extoling his wonderful virtues. After that, the opera gets down to the well-known story of Jason and Medea, however, this time it begins just as she’s realizing that Jason is not going to marry her and is actually courting King Creon’s daughter Creuse.

Madea’s revenge still includes her gift of a mantle for Creuse that bursts into flames and kills her and the murder of Medea’s two children she had with Jason, but in this version, her wrath includes her destroying the Palace of Corinth as she is flown through the sky in her fiery chariot drawn by dragons.

Of course, we’ll have a little difficulty “showing” you this on radio, so you’ll just have to use your imagination.

The cast in this recording from 1994 & 1995 includes

Lorraine Hunt ..... Medea
Mark Padmore ..... Jason
Monique Zanetti ..... Creuse
Bernard Deletre ..... King Creon
Jean-Mark Salzman ..... Oronte

The master of all things Baroque, William Christie, conducts Les Arts Florissants.

We’ll have just enough time after the opera to include another short work about “The Pleasures of Versailles” {“Les plaisirs de Versailles”) featuring Sophie Daneman, Katalin Karolyi, Steve Dugardin, and Francois Gardeil with William Christie once again leading Les Arts Florissants.

This week’s Sunday Opera is French Baroque at it’s best, so we hope you’ll tune in. (3 hrs., 30 min.)
