LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe and North America are both on Daylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. In UK, Ireland and Portugal add one (1) hour to GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (2) hours (some Eastern European countries are three (3) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Saturday Opera: Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea from the Utrecht Early Music Festival

The Coronation of Poppea (L’incoronazione di Poppea) is Claudio Monteverdi’s final opera, composed while he was the music director at Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice. A groundbreaking opera for its time, its story draws on real historical figures from Tacitus’s Annals (book XIV), following Poppea, mistress of the Roman emperor Nero, with its libretto written by Giovanni Francesco Busenello.

Monteverdi’s opera dives deep into the human condition and moral ambiguity through themes of ambition and desire, and steers away from the black and white trends of opera at the time, exploring the shades of grey between “right” and “wrong.” The main character, Poppea, is a woman who dreams of becoming empress, and she has a drive to make it happen – even though her lover, the Roman emperor Nero, is already married to Empress Ottavia. Along with Nero, Poppea devises schemes to inch ever closer towards her desires. A series of betrayals and manipulations bring about the downfall of many more virtuous characters throughout the story, with the eventual success of Poppea and Nero, asking the audience – has the hero won? French ensemble Le Banquet Céleste perform the opera on a range period instruments with their director Damien Guillon at the harpsichord. Even though presented more in the style of a concert than a fully-staged production, the singers bring the characters to life with their emotionally sublime performances. Concert recording sung in Italian. Live concert recording at the Utrecht Early Music Festival on 2 September 2023, courtesy of Euroradio.

Giacomo Puccini: Madame Butterfly. I

ARD Oper: Händels "Acis and Galatea" und "I lamenti d’Orfeo" von Ristori Zwei

Jahrhunderts.

Acis - Hugo Hymas
Galatea - Berit Norbakken
Polyphem - Andreas Wolf
Damon - Joshua Ellicott
Chorist - Jonas Boy
Capella Augustina
Leitung: Andreas Spering

Georg Friedrich Händel: "Acis and Galatea" - Masque in einem Akt

(Aufnahme vom September 2023 aus dem Funkhaus Wallrafplatz in Köln)

Orfeo - Valer Sabadus
Calliope - Francesca Lombardi
Mazzulli Ensemble 1700
Leitung: Dorothee Oberlinger

Giovanni Alberto Ristori: "I lamenti d’Orfeo" - Festa di camera in einem Akt

Opera Night: The Metropolitan Opera New York presents Kevin Puts' The Hours

Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Kevin Puts’s hit new opera, which played to sold-out audiences during its world-premiere production last season, triumphantly returns. The original trio of legendary divas—sopranos Renée Fleming and Kelli O’Hara and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato—reprise their celebrated portrayals of three women from different eras whose lives are connected through Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway. Bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen also returns as the dying author Richard, and Kensho Watanabe conducts this heart-wrenching drama, adapted from Michael Cunningham’s acclaimed novel and the Oscar-winning film it inspired.
