Saturday Night at the Opera: Così fan tutte from La Scala

Love and loyalty are tested in Mozart’s sparkling opera buffa Così fan tutte from La Scala, Milan.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s two act opera Così fan tutte (So do they all), was first performed on the 26th of January 1790 at the Burgtheater in Vienna and has gained a place in the frequently performed standard operatic repertoire.

Così fan tutte tells the story of two betrothed couples. The men Ferrando and Guglielmo are arguing with the older and wiser Don Alfonso about the fidelity of women.

With the magic of theatre, the two men are called away and the women Fiordiligi and Dorabella are left to fend off stranger’s advances who are in fact their fiancées in disguise.

Softening to their advances, Fiordiligi and Dorabella end up falling for opposite men and are about to be married when Ferrando and Guglielmo ‘return’ just in the nick of time to reveal their ruse.

Opera on 3: Handel's Ariodante

Handel's Ariodante from the Royal Ballet and Opera, the site of its premiere during Handel's first Covent Garden season in 1735.

Ariodante leads a charmed life - he's young, in love, and his fiancée, Ginevra, is first in line to the throne. But when a jealous rival conspires against them, Ginevra, falsely accused of infidelity, is stripped of her status, while Ariodante, believing himself betrayed, seeks oblivion. Handel's only opera set in the British Isles, the music reveals new emotional and dramatic depths, with fully rounded characters and some dazzling vocal fireworks.

In the first full production here since its 1735 premiere, a stunning cast includes Canadian mezzo-soprano Emily D'Angelo, taking on a role originally written for one of Handel's star castratos. Her wronged Ginevra is sung by American soprano Jacquelyn Stucker and the malevolent Polinesso by French Countertenor Christophe Dumaux. Baroque specialist Stefano Montanari conducts and plays violin from the podium.

Recorded in December, Andrew McGregor presents and is joined in the box by Handel expert Suzanne Aspden to talk about Handel's glorious score.

Operaaften: Zampa af Ferdinand Hérold

Zampa eller Marmorbruden er en fransk opera med det store udstræk, og som efter premieren i Paris i 1831 blev spillet 700 gange. Noget der har fænget publikum har helt klart været den kvindelige marmorstatue der bliver levende og synger i sidste akt. I dag har de færreste hørt om operaen eller hørt musikken- måske lige bortset fra ouverturen. Det er en koncertant opførelse du får at høre med Münchens Radioorkester og Bayerns Radiokor, og det er den amerikanske dirigent Erik Nielsen der dirigerer. Blandt solisterne får vi tenorerne Cyrille Dubois og Julien Henric at høre som hhv. Alphonse og piraten Zampa. Camille bliver sunget af sopranen Hélène Carpentier. I pausen fortæller Erik Nielsen om den fascinerende musik og de elementer som Hérold bringer i spil fra drikkevise til gys. (2 hrs., 55 min.)

Was werden sie sich dieses Mal einfallen lassen, die beiden Ausnahmekünstlerinnen Olga Neuwirth und Elfriede Jelinek? Mehr als 20 Jahre sind nach den letzten gemeinsamen Musiktheater-Projekten des Duos vergangen, "Bählamms Fest" und "Lost Highway". Jetzt wird ihre neue gemeinsame Oper uraufgeführt, "Monster’s Paradise", ein Auftragswerk der Staatsoper Hamburg. Es ist ein satirischer Blick auf unsere Zeit, eine Politgroteske, in der zwei "Vampiretten" sich auf eine Reise durch die Welt begeben. Eine Welt am Abgrund, beherrscht von einem riesenbabyhaften Tyrannen, gegen den das Monster Gorgonzilla den Kampf aufnimmt. Neuwirth selbst sagt, ihre Musik werde "in einer Welt voller Chaos und Destabilisierung durch verschiedene Frequenzen des Äthers schnauben, keuchen und wimmern". Tobias Kratzer, der Intendant der Staatsoper Hamburg, inszeniert "Monster’s Paradise" als neue "Grand Guignol Opéra".
