LISTED TIMES ARE GMT

A Word About Timings

All timings are listed in both Greenwich Mean Time and Eastern Daylight Time. Europe remains on Standard Time and North America is now on DAylight Time. For those of you who live in other time zones, you will need to make a calculation to derive the time of an event where you live. In North America subtract four (4) hours (from GMT) for the Eastern Time Zone, five (5) hours for the Central Time Zone, and six (6) hours for the Mountain Time Zone. Subtract seven (7) hours for the Pacific Time Zone, eight (8) hours for Alaska, and nine (9) hours for Hawaii. The UK, Ireland and Portugal are all in GMT. In most of the rest of Europe add one (1) hours (some Eastern European countries are two (2) hours ahead of GMT). In the Southern Hemisphere, Australia and New Zealand are on Daylight Time (Australia is 11 hours ahead of GMT; New Zealand is 13 hours ahead of GMT).

For those in the United States, it is useful to keep in mind that broadcasts in the evening hours often appear in the NEXT day's listings because they occur in the small hours in GMT time, which is our primary reference in the following listings.

For more information on time zone calculations, double click the time display on the lower right of your screen (if you are using a PC) to display the Time Zone tab, then click on the drop-down menu for a full list of time zones and their relationships to Greenwich Mean Time. You may also let the TIME CONVERTER do the calculations for you.

Sunday Afternoon at the Opera: Britten: War Requiem

Benjamin Britten's War Requiem (1962) has gone over the air on this program three times before on the Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend of 1988. 1990, and 2014. We remember how the American Doughboys fought and died alongside British troops in the 1914-18 "War to End All Wars." Britten's musical memorial to the war dead has more to do with the Armistice ending World War I on November 11, 1918. That's why I also broadcast it on Sunday, November 6, 2005.

Britten was a pacifist. He declined to fight in World War II. The poetry of Wilfred Owen, killed at the tender age of 25 just before the Armistice, served as a constant reminder to Britten of the horror and futility of war. "All a poet can do is warn," so Wilfred Owen wrote. Britten's settings of his poems constitute a ghastly monumental musical warning to the world of what war should have taught us, but which it seems we still refuse to learn. Owen's verse is interwoven with the Latin text of the Mass for the Dead.

The Britten War Requiem was recorded for the British Decca record company shortly after its concert premiere with the composer conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the London Bach Choir, Melos Ensemble and Highgate School boys' choir with distinguished vocal soloists of the mid twentieth century. In the lineup are Britten's longtime lover and musical partner tenor Peter Pears, German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya. This is the defining recorded interpretation of this work, reissued by Decca in CD format in 1999. (3 hrs., 30 min.)

The WWFM Sunday Opera: Antonin Dvorak's "Vanda"

If one were to hear the name Antonin Dvorak combined with opera, it’s probable that the first thing to come to mind would be “Rusalka.” However, on this week’s Sunday Opera, we’re going to hear one of the other nine operas he wrote: “Vanda,” which tells the story of the 8th century Polish warrior princess who saved her country.

After premiering in 1876 to great acclaim, the opera only ran for four more performances and, surprisingly, disappeared. Dvorak wrote it between the composition of his “Slavonic Dances” and “Slavonic Rhapsodies” when he felt the need to write more nationalistic music. The story is based on the life and death of Vanda, but because Dvorak wanted to write a grand five-act opera in the style of Meyerbeer, the libretto includes some superfluous material like a witch, a conjuring session, and a doomed love interest in the form of a devout Polish knight of humble birth.

Vanda (Olga Romanko) has become the queen of Poland after Her brother was banished for killing her other brother. She doubts her abilities, but she’s bolstered by her childhood friend and would be lover, the knight Slavoj (Peter Straka) and sister Bozena (Irina Tchistjakova). According to the high priest (Pavel Daniluk), Vanda must marry, but her husband must be of noble birth. Three suitors are brought to court, but none of them can fulfill any of the three challenges they must complete: shooting an arrow with a bow, throwing a threshing machine over a tree bough, or piercing a shield with a spear. Slavoj, however, steps in and does all three, but he is rebuffed by the priest because he is of low birth.

After the competition, another suitor arrives. Roderich (Ivan Kusnjer) is a German Prince who has been pursuing Vanda even before her father died, but she once again turns him down. Roderich begins to threaten Vanda, but Slavoj steps in and defeats him. Vanda stops Slavoj from killing Roderich which sets up the future battle where Roderich tries to take Poland by force with the help of the witch Homena (Michelle Breedt).

During the battle, Slavoj proves his prowess and Vanda kills Roderich, but not before promising the gods that she would sacrifice herself if she could be victorious which she does against the pleadings of Bozena and Slavoj by throwing herself into the Vistula River.

In this recording, Gerd Albrecht conducts the Prague Chamber Choir, the West German Radio Chorus – Koln, and the West German Symphony Orchestra – Koln.

After the opera, please stay tuned for more music of Dvorak including his Symphony No. 3, one of his six symphonic poems, this one “The Noon Witch,” and the very familiar and popular “Humoresque.” (3 hrs., 30 min.)
